External Blog Hiatus
Hi all,
Apologies for my negligence of this blog. I have actually been actively blogging. But it’s been internally at Microsoft, on topics that can’t be shared publicly. This summer I will resume posts to this blog.
Topics I have been pondering include:
- The tactile web – what touch means for analytics.
- Psychology and web analytics – how motivated reasoning is the enemy of data.
- Predictions – who will buy WebTrends?
- Why the cost of behavioral targeting is not worth the return.
- The internet in Africa – the societal impact of digital malnutrition.
- Leading indicators – the Internet as a Predictor of Future Economic Trends.
If there are other topics of interest, send me a note.
Thanks – Peter
When Jim Sterne asked me to be on the panel for Emetrics a few months ago titled, What Executives Want From Web Analytics?", I thought that’ll be easy. I know exactly what execs want for web analytics, I’ve been doing this for over 10 years.

The new year is still 2 weeks away after all, it’s hard to think that far ahead….Read more….

Facebook Topples Google Part I
If you don’t think internet is really having an impact on the speed of business consider this fact. It took Toyota 77 years to dethrone GM as the largest automaker. Facebook is on the verge of doing the same to Google in a little under 7 years*.
In September 2010, ComScore reported that Facebook attracted 620M visitors to Google’s 613**. Given that Google has been sitting in that spot for most of this decade, it’s an impressive achievement.
Facebook Topples Google: Part II
My measure for whether or not a new technology has been fully adopted by society is marked by the day my father starts using it.
Well, last month Dad friended me. Needless to say, I wasn’t surprised it happened the same month Facebook surpassed Google to become the #1 site on the planet. Ladies and Gentlemen, we now have a new heavy-weight champion of the world (wide web).
